Etsy DDP From Australia: DDP Shipping Routes to the US

If you sell from Australia to US buyers, the cheapest route that genuinely prepays duty is Australia Post through MyPost Business plus a free Zonos Verified Account: Zonos bills your card, and your buyer pays nothing at the door. You can’t set it up inside Etsy — US-bound Australia Post labels have been suspended there since around August 25, 2025 — so buy the label elsewhere and paste the tracking into the order.

What changed for Australia sellers

  • August 29, 2025 — the $800 de minimis exemption ended for every country (EO 14324). Every parcel into the US is dutiable, and it isn’t coming back.
  • February 24, 2026 — a flat 10% Section 122 surcharge took effect on top of your product’s normal (MFN) rate, after the Supreme Court struck down the IEEPA tariffs (CBP CSMS #67844987).
  • February 28, 2026 — the transitional postal flat fee ($80/$160/$200 per item) ended. Postal parcels pay ordinary ad valorem duty, and labels need a 10-digit HTS code.
  • June 24, 2026 — CBP published two rules making the suspension effectively permanent — interim final rules, comments closing July 24.
  • July 9, 2026 — Etsy began expecting DDP on US orders. Nothing is blocked; the enforcement is financial.
  • July 24, 2026 — Section 122 expires by operation of law at 12:01 a.m. EDT, its 150-day statutory limit. Only Congress can extend it, no bill has advanced as of July 19, and no replacement is published. A new US postal informal entry process starts that morning.

Australia Post retail counters need no account at all: duty and a handling fee are paid at the POST+ terminal at lodgement, up to US$800, but it’s fully manual. Free DHL Express, UPS and FedEx accounts bill duty to you rather than your buyer, though their fees have floors: DHL’s Duty Tax Paid fee is 2% of fiscal charges, minimum AUD 30; UPS Australia adds AUD 30 plus 2% of duty and tax, minimum $14 — roughly AUD 45–50 on a US$100 parcel. Easyship syncs Etsy orders and offers Pre-paid (DDP), but your own courier account needs its Plus plan (~US$29/month).

What does NOT work

  • Sendle — halted all Australian bookings on January 11, 2026 after its parent, FAST Group, ran out of capital. Its Duties Paid product was the best built-in option here; no relaunch since, and the marketing pages are still up.
  • Etsy’s own shipping labels — Australia Post labels for the US lane suspended since around August 25, 2025 until those carriers support DDP; no reactivation announced.
  • Australia Post online lodgement without a Zonos Verified Account — the parcel is returned to sender.
  • DHL or UPS paid by card with no carrier account — UPS states this defaults to DDU; DHL’s duty billing needs an account. Both accounts are free.
  • Contract-only consolidators — Landmark Global sells through its sales team, Spring GDS/PostNL wants roughly 100+ parcels a month, Sendcloud has no Australian origin, and Aramex publishes no prepay option.

What Etsy actually enforces

Since July 9, 2026 Etsy expects non-US sellers to price duties and import fees in upfront through a DDP option. Nothing stops a DDU parcel — the penalty is money. Those orders lose Purchase Protection, and if a carrier bills your buyer tariffs or collection fees, the buyer can be refunded and the charge is deducted from you. DDP also entered Etsy’s ranking disclosures on October 16, 2025, though the effect is reckoned small.

The tooling hasn’t caught up. As of July 18, 2026 there’s still no DDP toggle — DDP comes from picking a carrier service that supports it — and with Australia Post, Canada Post and Evri suspended for US-bound Etsy labels, Australian sellers have no in-Etsy path at all. The Zonos-powered estimator still fails on listings with variations, so classify those yourself. Etsy’s buyer-facing help still tells buyers they’re generally responsible for customs costs — the opposite of the mandate, so say it plainly in your listings.

Where DDP is genuinely not available, Purchase Protection keeps a formal exception at Etsy’s discretion: explicit buyer consent through Etsy Messages plus an accurate estimate of the charges. Etsy may verify it was, and the buyer loses the right to dispute those charges.

Selling to the EU too?

Since July 1, 2026 every B2C consignment up to €150 entering the EU carries a flat €3 customs duty per tariff line — not per parcel, not per unit. Five identical prints are one line, so €3; a print plus a candle, €6. The declarant pays: you via the label, or your buyer at the door on DDU. Etsy has confirmed it does not collect it at checkout. It runs to July 1, 2028. Details: the €3 EU customs fee explained and what it means on Etsy.

FAQ

How much duty will a US order carry? As of mid-July 2026, your product’s MFN rate plus the 10% Section 122 surcharge — about US$10 per US$100 declared. The MFN part varies: candles and plush toys are Free, wooden decor 3.2%, silver jewelry 5%, a stoneware mug 10%. Art prints are the exception: HTS 9903.03.11 excludes informational materials (posters, photographs, artworks) from Section 122, and every line under 4911.91 is Free at MFN — a print’s duty line was 0%.

I’ve read the surcharge was raised to 15% — is that right? No. Logistics sites keep publishing it, but no proclamation ever raised the rate. 15% is the statutory ceiling on a Section 122 surcharge — “not to exceed 15 percent ad valorem” (19 U.S.C. §2132) — not the rate in force, which stays 10% until expiry (CBP CSMS #67844987).

What happens on July 24, 2026? Two things. Section 122 expires at 12:01 a.m. EDT; only Congress could extend it, no bill has advanced, and no replacement is published — don’t reprice on a guess. Separately, postal shipments up to $2,500 move to a new informal entry process: a monthly worksheet with 10-digit HTS codes, paid via Pay.gov by the 7th of the following month, first payment due August 7. The deferred-compliance window to October 22, 2026 covers only PGA goods and Chapter 98/99 duties, not ordinary parcels.

Is anything aimed at Australia after that? USTR has proposed a Section 301 schedule (FR 2026-11296): 10% for 14 economies, 12.5% for the other 46 of the 60 investigated, with Australia in the 12.5% band. As of July 19, 2026 there’s no final action and no effective date — proposed rates, not rates in force.
